Course Summary:
In this course, students will learn about the advanced techniques employed in the grading of clarity, colour and cut of a diamond. Students have the opportunity to observe the quality of a diamonds cut in detail and taught how to observe the hearts and arrows. Students will be introduced to the grading of mounted diamonds and also how to identify natural diamonds from imitations like the cubic zirconia, synthetic moissanite, and synthetic diamond. Comparison of the usefulness of various instruments (e,g, Jemeter digital 90, Presidium Reflective meter, and the Presidium Tester) in testing natural diamond from imitations will be made. Students will also view some of the diamonds that are being treated with the latest treatment methods. These includes the irradiated diamond, High Pressure and High Temperature (HPHT) diamond, laser drilled diamond and fracture filling in diamond.
