This course will cover:

General Introduction to the properties of diamonds and explanation of the 4Cs Principals of diamond optics | Favourable and unfavourable angles of observation | Principles of weighing, calculation and rounding of carat | Weight identification of external and internal characteristics and discussion of their respective symbols and specific notation | Determination of the colour of the diamonds by comparison with master stones under standardized artificial light | Identification of clarity treatments (eg. crack filling) | Measuring the size, position, brightness and number of images of inclusions | Clarity grading of diamonds using a microscope | Introduction to the use of the 10x loupe | Measuring proportions using the proportionscope | Grading cut: description and evaluation of proportions and finish (symmetry deviations) | Clarity of diamonds using a 10x loupe | The different characteristics and properties of diamond and its limitation (simulants) are compared. Explanation of tests to distinguish fakes from real | Examination/estimation of cut grade with 10x loupe | Examination of fancy cuts and round brilliants | Ample time will be allocated for practice before the final examination
