Aims/Objectives:
To equip students with knowledge of jade.
|
Target Students:
People who are interested to learn more about diamonds, gemstones, jade and other precious stones/minerals.

Pre-requisites:
None. However, it will be an advantage for students to have a pass in "Gemology - Diamond(Basic)" or "Gemology - Gemstone(Basic)" or their equivalents.

Course Summary:
This course will lead students through the technical aspects of identification of treated jade. Students will be introduced to advanced techniques like infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope. Students will learn the basic steps using loupe and microscope to identify A-, B-, C-, B+C- and D-jade. Students will also learn how to identify some of the jade imitation like serpentine, quartzite, grossular garnet and also glass. Basic quality grading of jade shall be taught which will give students a better understanding why certain grading methods are more suitable for our local market. Trading of jade will also be mentioned.

Course Outline:
- History of jade
- Formation, deposits & cutting of jade
- Chemical and physical properties of jade: jadeite & nephrite
- Particular attention on Jade & its treatments: A, B, C, B+C-jade and D-jade. Others like coated jade, etc
- Use of instrument: loupe, microscope, refractometer, spectroscope, polariscope, specific gravity, Chelsea filter, ultraviolet light and infrared spectroscopy
- Identification of other imitations like serpentine, quartzite, grossular garnet & glass
- Basic quality grading of jadeite
- Practical sessions with jadeite sample for testing
